McKittrick Old-Fashioned Cocktail

This is the drink that started my love affair with bourbon.  My husband and I were at Raines Law Room in NYC and asked our server for a chocolatey Manhattan.  We were handed two McKittrick Old-Fashioneds and we were hooked.  The McKitrick Old-Fashioned is smooth and rich, perfect for those of us who don’t like sugary drinks.

Theo Lieberman of Milk & Honey fame crafted this delicious concoction.  The drink was inspired by Sleep No More, an interactive take on Macbeth that is set in the fictional McKitrick Hotel in Chelsea.  I saw Sleep No More a few years ago and was spellbound.  Now, whenever I make a McKittrick Old-Fashioned I am reminded of a time when I wore a silver mask and chased after actors and dancers through a multi-story warehouse, trying to make sure I didn’t miss a minute of action.

2 ounces Bourbon
1/2 ounce Pedro Ximenez Sherry
2 dashes Molé Bitters
Brandied cherries, for garnish

Tips:  Because this Old-Fashioned doesn’t contain syrup, you may want to use a sweeter (and smoother) bourbon.  I like Elijah Craig.  Also, don’t ruin this drink with those bright red cherries you can buy at the supermarket.  Try Luxardo Cherries instead.
